Our guide Abdul (Marrakech Guided Tours) offered us this Boucherouite rug, which was among many other old Boucherouite rugs in a house in the village of Arghen, where we had lunch during a hiking tour in the Atlas Mountains. This rug was handmade with recycled clothes and fabric, by the grandmother of the house. The women of the villages around Imlil share a single loom to make their rugs. Recently, a non-profit organisation was founded by an American couple to help women of the region to become independent. The organisation donated three looms so that the women of these vilages can can make more rugs and sell their creations to the hikers and tourists passing through. We have collaborated with this organisation to finance the construction of their workshop. We have also sent old clothes and fabrics to be used in creation of new rugs. 50% of the profits from the sales of these rugs will directly go to the women of the village.

Due to the traditional handmade nature of this item, and unlike mass produced items, shapes are not always totally uniform. Any imperfections are part of each item's own history and only add to its uniqueness, beauty and value.
